new moon 14feb2010

New Moon 14 Feb 2010, Phoenix, Arizona (RL)

NEXT EXPECTED NEW MOON

11 August 2010, Wednesday - Starts the 5th Biblical month

Expected New Moon:

On 11 August 2010, Wednesday
The New Moon is expected to be seen after sunset.
Moon elevation above the horizon for most of the United States will be about 10 degrees at sunset.
Moon age for the four U.S. time zones east to west: 45, 46, 47, and 48 hours.
Visibility: easily visible if skies are clear.
Sunset to moonset: approximately 55 minutes.

Outside of the United States:
An early sighting will be possible on the island of Tahiti on 10 August 2010, but we get no reports from there.
The moon will then pass the International Date Line and all further sightings will be on 11 August 2010.

If skies are clear, sightings will be possible, after sunset on 11 August 2010, in Australia, South Africa, and Jerusalem.

WE NEED SOMEONE IN SOUTH AMERICA, SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR, TO REPORT NEW MOONS

The fall and winter new moons track quite south of the equator.  For this reason, someone in the southern hemisphere might be able to see the new moon crescent a day before it can be seen in the continental U.S.  or in Jerusalem.
I have no new moon reporters in South America.  If someone knows of a person or persons south of the equator in South America who could send me monthly reports, it would be very helpful.

The purpose of having this report is to provide a place to check on New Moon sightings reported from around the world. The sightings listed are from  known, reliable sources. New helper's  reports are software checked and compared to experienced helper's reports.

Here in Phoenix, we begin our watch the day before the expected sighting, and have an average of four individuals present. Although we use technical information and/or records to help us know where and when to look, we only consider a new moon sighting seen by the unaided eye (corrective eyeglasses accepted). According to Hebrew history, experienced men were sent to the hills around Jerusalem to look for the thin crescent of the visible new moon and confirm the start of a new month. Witnesses worked in pairs and were tested separately when they brought in their reports. Testing consisted of being questioned about such things as the moon's relative position to the sun and drawing what the crescent looked like. Although two witnesses passing the test validated a sighting, other witnesses were also tested. (Babylonian Talmud, tract Rosh Hashanah, 21b through 24a).

TO THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO HELP WITH MOON SIGHTING REPORTS:
Thanks for offering to help.  I place new moon reports on my web site with the knowledge that the people sending me reports are knowledgeable about new moon sightings and are reliable.  This is done to give people confidence that the reports they depend on are valid.

You know about what I believe from my web site.  Would you please give me some information about your beliefs and your experience sighting new moons.  It doesn't have to be very detailed, but just enough to fulfill my obligation to the brethren who refer to my site for determining their high days.

This does not mean that I expect you to believe what I believe; some of my reports are from astronomers and people of different faiths, but all are sincere and reliable.  Thanks again.
